I´ve been a NIN fan for the latest 16 years, since I listened “Head Like a Hole” for the first time. Thanks for visiting me.
YearZero
A música My Violent Heart“, do novo álbum do NIN, YearZero, “vazou“. Curiosa a coincidência de uma música com esse nome “vazar” justamente no Valentine´s Day, certo? Certo. Agora, “Survivalism”, foi tocada no rádio (KROQ) e rapidamente, viralmente, replicada pela web.
Histórico
Em dezembro, Trent tinha postado no fórum do The Spiral:
“Usually when I finish a record, I have to go into battle with the people whose job is to figure out how to sell the record. The only time that didn’t happen was ‘With Teeth’. This time, however, I’m expecting an epic struggle. This is not a particularly friendly record and it certainly doesn’t sound like anything else out there right now. Artists these days are not encouraged to experiment or take risks, and my punishment is on its way.Feeling physically run-down and emotionally insecure at this moment, and baffled as to why I feel the need to share this with you!”

Parece que ele achou uma maneira de colocar os fãs em polvorosa e fazer com que as vendas de YearZero aconteçam, através de uma criativa e bem estruturada campanha de marketing viral, embora ele mesmo negue, em comentário postado no The Spiral:
“The term “marketing” sure is a frustrating one for me at the moment. What you are now starting to experience IS “year zero”. It’s not some kind of gimmick to get you to buy a record - it IS the art form… and we’re just getting started.”
Na minha opinião, é aceitável que ele considere o ARG (Alternative Reality Game) que foi criado como uma forma de webart - porque certamente é - mas, existe uma grande agência especializada em marketing viral trabalhando no projeto, o que está garantindo o sucesso.
Viral marketing de primeira
Um número de telefone apareceu em uma das camisetas da tour atual que o NIN está fazendo pela Europa:
1-310-295-1040
Ao ligar para o número, podia-se ouvir uma estranha conversa, com um pedaço da música “Survivalism” ao final.
O NIN espalhou vários sites pela web, que começaram a ser encontrados a partir de outra camiseta da tour atual, onde se lê, escondido, “I am trying to believe”, que levou os fãs ao site http://iamtryingtobelieve.com/.

“I’m trying to avoid getting too detailed about this, but I will tell you that this is a concept record, and it’s part of a bigger picture of a number of things I’m working on. Essentially, I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist.”
“Eu estou tentando evitar falar em muitos detalhes mas eu posso dizer que é um disco conceitual, e é parte de algo maior de inúmeras coisas nas quais estou trabalhando. Basicamente, eu escrevi a trilha-sonora de um filme que não existe. Esse álbum é um pouco mais eletrônico, e eu diria que a batida é um elemento maior do que já foi no passado. Meus dois centavos
Percebo uma forte influência em YearZero de 1984, de George Orwell e Laranja Mecânica, de Anthony Burgess. Essa influência já era visível do videoclipe de We´re in this together, do album Fragile. Sobre o album, escrevi um artigo especial que pode ser lido no blog Boo Monster Bop.

“Calling NIN mainstream is definitly just trolling. Trent created the entire genre of industrial metal, and while some singles of his have gotten quite some popularity, his body of work is absolutely massive. Most of his music would never touch the airwaves. Listening to NIN doesn’t mean that you heard “Only” on your local rock station. It means actually delving into over a decade of musical exploration.”
